Alabama Power’s Renew Our Rivers efforts will be focused on Lake Demopolis next weekend for a community clean-up.

Volunteers are needed to meet at the Demopolis City Landing at 7 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 29-30, where work will begin to clean up debris and other items from the lake. The work will end each day at noon, followed by a picnic lunch.

Volunteers for Renew Our Rivers, one of the Southeast’s largest river cleanup campaigns, have collected more than 14 million pounds of trash and debris since the program’s inception in 2000. This year, 31 cleanups are planned through November on the Alabama, Black Warrior, Cahaba, Chattahoochee, Coosa, Mobile and Tallapoosa rivers.

So far, more than 110,000 volunteers, including Alabama Power employees, civic groups, schools, and homeowners and boat owner organizations, have participated in Renew Our Rivers, removing some 15 million pounds of trash, Styrofoam, and other litter from Alabama and Georgia lakes.

In 2016 alone 350,000 pounds of trash were collected in Alabama cleanups by more than 6,000 volunteers.
