DHEC registration extended to Monday

Registration for classes at the Demopolis Higher Education Center at the Sports-Plex has been extended to Monday, Jan. 11, allowing area students to sign up for classes for the spring semester.
“Due to the weather, we had to close (Thursday and Friday),” said DHEC administrative assistant Dianne Lehning. “So, we are extending our registration to accommodate our students.”
“The decision was made (Wednesday night) to close the university except for personnel needed to carry on essential operations,” said Dr. Ken Tucker, the chair of the XXX department at the University of West Alabama. “For consistency, the Demopolis Higher Education Center will follow the same guidelines. Registration was originally set for Friday at both campuses, and the registration for both will now be on Monday. Classes will also start on Monday as scheduled. So, on Monday, we’ll have registration going on and classes starting.”
Tucker said that students can register online at www.uwa.edu and can call the UWA registrar’s office for assistance.
“But, we will have registrars at the Demopolis Higher Education Center on Monday,” he said. “They can also register there, in person. They may feel more comfortable doing that. We do have the online backup and the telephone backup as well.”
The University of West Alabama – the managing partner at DHEC – has been able to replace the classes that were originally scheduled to be taught by personnel from the center’s former managing partner, Alabama Southern Community College. ASCC announced Dec. 12 that it would not teach those classes in Demopolis.
“Many of those classes have (been filled by UWA),” Tucker said. “They all have not, though. The problem was that (ASCC) withdrew at the eleventh hour, and we had already completed our pre-registration process. We’ve had to scramble here at the very end.
“Many classes have been filled up, and we’re working on some others. Some classes have more than one section open. We need to let people know that they can come out and register for classes at DHEC or at UWA on Monday. We will work to make sure students can get the classes they need.”
