A 15-year old boy riding a bicycle was struck by a vehicle around 3:36 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, according Demopolis Fire Chief Tommy Tate.
Information from the family says the victim had some internal bleeding and had surgery Wednesday night. As of Thursday morning, he is on a ventilator at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.
The incident happened at the intersection of Arcola Road and First Avenue in Demopolis.
“When the child left by life flight, he was in critical but stable condition,” Tate said.
Demopolis Police Chief Tommie Reese said the boy and vehicle “t-boned,” with the teen coming into contact with the side of the vehicle.
The driver, Theodre Winters, 56, was arrested at the scene. He is currently facing D.U.I. charges, Reese said.
Tate said bystanders stepped in and did a great job to help.
“It was a great effort of the citizens, the fire department, the police department and all those that helped. It was a group effort and I am very proud of those guys for not giving up,” he said.
In addition, Tate said the victim of the incident was related to one of the battalion chiefs in the department.
Battalion Chief Talmus Williams, Lt. Greg Russell and Sam Curtis were those who responded to the call for the fire department.
