DEMOPOLIS – Pancakes are not typically the first thing that comes to mind when deciding what to eat for dinner, but it worked for the Demopolis City Schools Foundation Thursday as it hosted its first McDonald’s Hot Cakes and Sausage Dinner fundraiser.

“I thought it was successful,” Jan McDonald, executive director of the foundation, said. “We hope to make it an annual event.”

Though the event did not sell quite the tickets Foundation board members had hoped for, nearly 300 tickets were sold for a total of approximately $2,000.

“We had hoped to sell 375 to 400 tickets, and I still have to talk to the board members to see what our total was, but we had 287 tickets redeemed (Thursday) night,” McDonald said.

The foundation hopes to make the pancake dinner fundraiser an annual event, and McDonald said Thursday night’s event went well considering it was the first.

“There was a little holdup early because everyone apparently wanted to eat at the same time and the people at McDonalds can only make so many pancakes at a time,” she said. Despite the delay, customers were patient and did not complain, and the rest of the night went well.

“From what I heard a lot of the people were taking the pancakes to the Sax in the City concert downtown,” McDonald said.

Money raised from the fundraiser will go toward operating expenses for the foundation and toward grants given to Demopolis teachers to aid them in the classroom.

“We’re already gearing up for our next fundraiser,” McDonald said. “We will be selling Boston Butts prepared by the Championship Buttmaster Cooking Team.”

Orders for the butts will be taken starting in the next few weeks, she said, and the meat will be ready for pickup the morning of the Iron Bowl, just in time for Thanksgiving.
