Demopolis High senior safety Anthony Hardy has his collegiate plans set after verbally committing to Tuskegee University Thursday.

“It’s big because I get to play four more years,” Hardy said of the opportunity to continue his football career.

“It’s a great opportunity. Athletically, it’s an unbelievable program. (Tuskegee head coach Willie J. Slater has) won six national titles as a head coach. They’ve won four conference championships in a row. They send guys to the NFL every year,” DHS head coach Tom Causey said. “Academically, Tuskegee has great facilities, great academic progrms. When (he) graduates from there, (he’ll) have a degree that will carry a little weight.”

At Tuskegee, Hardy will join current teammate and future Tuskegee receiver Larry Cobb as well as former DHS standout and Golden Tiger safety Dontrell Miller.

“That’s great. Dontrell Miller is there,” Hardy said. “Hopefully I’ll be playing alongside him and competing against Larry everyday.”

Hardy accepted the offer after spending a few weeks talking it over with his family, who initially thought the Class of 2010 member was joking when he informed them of the offer. After TU assistant coach Reginald Ruffin showed his persistence and desire to recruit Hardy, the family realized the opportunity that had been offered.

“I told my mom and my dad that I’m kind of an investment,” Hardy said. “All the trouble I’ve been trying to get to practice on time, it’ll all pay off in the end. I thank God for Him giving me the opportunity to play college ball.”

In Hardy, the Golden Tigers get a player who made 49 tackles, deflected 10 passes and recorded seven interceptions in 2009 in addition to making a memorable play in the Class 5A state title game in which he ripped the ball from the arms of a Russellville player and sprinted 74 yards for a touchdown.

“I think Anthony’s potential is endless,” Causey said. “They’re getting a high quality kid with a lot of character. He’s going to graduate with a degree from Tuskegee and be a solid alumnus for them for years to come.”
