DEMOPOLIS – Although the results of Tuesday’s Senate District 24 Democratic race are unofficial, Demopolis Councilman Thomas Moore and Hale County State Rep. Bobby Singleton are headed to a runoff.

With Bibb and Choctaw counties still outstanding, Moore took 41.7 percent of the 16,239 votes cast in the election where more than 60,000 voters are registered.

“We’re ready to go to work. We worked hard in the primary, we’ll work hard in runoff,” Moore said.

Moore carried Marengo, Greene and Sumter counties in the race where Tuscaloosa State Rep. Bryant Melton never really was a factor when the vote totals started trickling in.

Still Moore commended Melton.

“I’d like to commend Rep. Melton for a fine campaign. We worked in Tuscaloosa County, but he was the strong candidate and we look forward to working it now,” he said. “I respect Rep. Melton.”

Moore took 2,640 votes in Marengo County, 594 in Perry, 281 in Tuscaloosa, 1,147 in Greene, 1,037 in Hale and 1,074 in Sumter County.

Singleton carried Hale County by almost a two-to-one margin, drawing 2,058 votes to Moore’s 1,037 and Melton’s 345.

In Perry County, Singleton captured 1,102 votes, in Tuscaloosa, 965, in Marengo, 450, in Greene 829 and in Sumter 995. In Choctaw County, he garnered 490 votes to Moore’s 379 and Melton’s 44.

Melton carried his home county with 1,541 votes but fell short in Marengo County where he picked up only 87 votes. In Perry County, he captured 357 votes, in Greene 308, in Hale, 345 and in Sumter 429.

Singleton, contacted on his cellular telephone, said he was on the line with someone else and would call back to comment for this story.

Moore and Singleton will face each other in the runoff on Dec. 14.
