Gaineswood has been honored with a distinguished service award by the Alabama Historical Commission.
The award came during the Alabama Preservation Conference in Mobile.
Friends of Gaineswood member Gwyn Turner accepted the award on behalf of the organization that supports the state-owned historical site in Demopolis.
The Friends of Gaineswood is an active partner with the Alabama Historical Commission in the preservation
and programs of one of America’s finest examples of Greek Revival style architecture.
General Nathan Bryan Whitfield built the historic landmark between 1843 and 1861. Whitfield descendants and local civic leaders make up the friends group.
