Quarterback Club readies for Daddy-Daughter Dance

The Demopolis Quarterback Club is set to host its Second Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance at the high school gym on Friday, Feb. 12, from 7 to 10 p.m.
The event saw considerable success in its first year, prompting QB club president Kenny Freeman and other members to call for few alterations to the plan in 2010.
“I think we had somewhere around 300 people there last year,” Freeman said. “We hope to have twice that many this time. Everything really went smooth last year.
The only notable change to the agenda involves the venue, which will see the dance shift across town from the Demopolis Civic Center to the DHS gym.
“You can get a little bit more folks in (the DHS gym) and the civic center was booked up right around Valentine’s Day,” Freeman said.
The idea for the event originated from somewhat of an unlikely source as a former Demopolis resident now living out of state passed the suggestion along.
“Mike Randall’s daughter who lives in Georgia, Emily, said something to Mike about it and Mike brought it to the quarterback club,” Freeman said of the event’s origins. “Last year the fathers and daughters had a blast. Daddies did a lot of dancing.”
The dance — which has seen the work of a committee including Jennifer Overstreet, Elizabeth Renner, Tracy Stein and Kathy Oates — is restricted to daughters and father figures, but has had enough success that the club is considering a similar event for the mothers who are left out.
“No mamas, just fathers and daughters,” Freeman said before making reference to the club’s future plans. “We’re going to try to do something in the future too for mothers and sons. We just haven’t figured out what to do yet.”
the dance calls for semi-formal attire and is restricted to girls from kindergarten through fifth grade as well as a male guardian such as a father, grandfather, stepfather or uncle. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
“They can call me at (West Alabama Real Estate) or they can call (Demopolis High School) and talk to Kathy Oates,” Freeman said.
