Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! That’s what kids will find at the next program sponsored by the Demopolis Public Library as part of its Funtastic Summer Reading Program.

Children’s Librarian Connie McPherson has planned a morning of games, animals and other circus fun to kick off the youngest group’s summer.

“We’ll have carnival-type games like ring the elephant’s trunk, feed the clown – the children will try to throw cookies into a plastic clown’s face – and the lion tamer, which is basically throwing stuffed animals through a hula hoop,” she said.

Additionally, she said the event will feature a circus animal parade, with children parading through the library on stick horses and other stick animals.

“We’ll have face painting, tattoos, and even a little roller coaster,” she said.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m., and is scheduled to last until 10:30, but McPherson said it will probably last longer.

The activities are designed primarily for children ages two through pre-K, though Library Director Lindsy Gardner said parents may use their discretion within reason.

“If you have a child who is 1 1/2 that you think would enjoy it, bring them,” she said.

McPherson said most Wednesday programs will be brief, reading programs, but said this was a fun way to kick off the reading program.

“I’m still coming up with ideas,” she said, noting that there may be a few fun surprises for attendees.

The circus fun will be followed by Critter Rick, who is returning this summer for grades K-3. Rick features an exotic array of animals from snakes to monkeys to birds. The show will begin Thursday at 3:15.
