Do you ever look at your children and think, “You should be an actor”? If so, the opportunity has come to see them in action.

The CaneBrake Players are offering a summer student workshop on July 18-22 for ages 8 and up.

The workshops will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the Old School on Main Street.

According to Denise Meyer, program coordinator, participants are divided into appropriate age groups and will learn how to perform Shakespeare scenes.

For $40 a person, students will learn under the direction of Gerald Partin from the Alpha Kappa Players, a drama-touring group based in Montgomery, as he leads them through a summer of Shakespearean fun.

Partin, a graduate of Bob Jones University, is a member of CITA, Christians in Theater Arts and former principal of Community Christian Academy in Montgomery. According to Meyer, he is a “really cool guy” as well.

Fees for the program also include supplies and a mid-morning snack.

Partin will provide the scripts, costumes, sets, lighting, and training. Participants are simply required to bring themselves and their talent.

Participants will make props, experiment with fake blood, learn Shakespearean insults, play theater games, and take pictures in their costumes.

Jim Webb will also be on hand to teach participants sword fighting techniques and stage combat.

The program began in 1997 and has been in action almost every year since then.

“Each year it’s been a little different,” Meyers said. “The first year the kids wrote their own plays and they’ve also done more of a musical thing with songs from Annie and Oliver.”

On Friday, there will be a free evening performance open to the public.
