All three area teams ranked in the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s pre-season poll changed position in this week’s ASWA poll, the first of the regular season.
Demopolis moved up one spot to second in 4A, garnering five first-place votes to finish just behind first-place UMS-Wright, 25-0 victors over Robertsdale last Friday. Wright moved into first after top-ranked Deshler fell to Russellville, the second-ranked team in 5A, and dropped to fourth.
Despite giving Thomasville (now ranked ninth in 4A) all it could handle in a 20-13 loss and hanging on to five first-place votes, defending 1A champion Sweet Water fell three spots to fourth. 2004 finalist RA. Hubbard took over the top spot, followed by Wadley and Sweet Water regional foe American Christian, 62-18 winners over Coffeeville.
Southern Academy moved up one spot to fifth in the AISA poll, taking advantage of a Morgan Academy loss to edge in front of the Selma school 130 points to 107.
Several ASWA members were reportedly unable to vote due to power outages caused by hurricane Katrina. As of yet, no other teams in the area have received a vote in the poll.
