The new Interact Club at Demopolis High School pinned its first members during a ceremony Tuesday night.
Chris Petrey, a Rotary club member and organizer of the program, said Interact is a great program for students to get involved and serve the community.
“We have 18 students, which is a great number to start with,” he said.
The Interact Club serves as a service organization and is sponsored by the Demopolis Rotary Club, which will provide students with support and guidance. However, the Interact club will be self-governing with their own elected student leadership.
The group elected officers which include: president Bailey Petrey, vice president LaTimberly Washington, secretary Paige Gandy and treasurer Sutton Aiken.
Some of the things Petrey mentioned the students would receive from being a part of the club are leadership skills, individual responsibility and the benefits of hard work.
Rachel Etheridge, DHS faculty advisor for Interact, said students have a lot of good ideas to make great contributions to Demopolis and surrounding areas.
“Some of their ideas are to collect toys for kids in the area around Christmas who may not receive toys for the holiday,” Etheridge said.
Leon Clark, principal of Demopolis High School and Rotary Club member, gave closing remarks for the program, and said the club will open many opportunities for students down the road.
“This is a great organization and students will make connections with people and do community service to benefit the city of Demopolis,” he said.
Other students inducted included: Logan Boone, Asia Chancelor, Taylor Cooper, Reid-Claire Stein, Morgan Godwin, Phillip Godwin, Logan Etheridge, Jamiyah Smith, Alicia Pipkins, Emily Riffe, Elisha Merriweather, Deandria Hicks, Kayla Cochran and Jackie Renfroe.
