DEMOPOLIS – As a retiree from the jewelry business, Jeanette Lowe joined the “Pink Ladies” at BWMH January 13, 2000.

“After my husband passed, I felt like this was something I could be useful in,” Lowe said. “It’s a good thing to be involved in.”

Lowe and her husband, the late Don Sr., moved to Demopolis from Birmingham soon after they were married in 1947 and have two children and four grandchildren.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Lowe’s son, Don Jr., has continued the family business and is the current owner of Lowe Jewelry Co.

Since becoming a member Lowe has held office as president and secretary of the auxiliary and has worked in various hospital departments such as the gift shop, front desk, outpatient clinic and “wherever else they need” her.

Of the departments, Lowe said she enjoys working in the outpatient clinic the most.

“Working over there I see a lot of people I haven’t seen in a while,” she said.

She also enjoys the “Love Lights” fundraiser the auxiliary organizes each holiday season.

“They are in memory of people you admire and are close to,” she said.

During her spare time, Lowe likes to crochet baby blankets and exercise at the wellness center.

She is also an active member of the Church of Christ.

“We just had a luncheon yesterday [Tuesday],”Lowe said. “I am still tired from that.”

Although she was exhausted from the previous day’s event, Lowe still managed to showed up for her volunteer hours at BWMH.

“I’d rather be doing something where I feel like I am helping other people,” she said. “That’s why I like to work in places like the outpatient clinic and the front desk.”

Slowly approaching five years of volunteering at BWMH, Lowe said she has no plans of retiring her pink smock any time soon.

“I will be here until I get where I am not able,” she said. “But I hope that doesn’t come anytime soon.”
