County unemployment falls nearly two percent

Marengo County’s unemployment rate fell 1.6 percent from August to September, according to numbers released Friday.
Marengo’s jobless rate now stands at 9.8 percent, down from 11.4 percent a month ago. September’s numbers reflect 753 county residents out of work.
Statewide, unemployment decreased to 8.3 percent, down from August’s rate of 8.5 percent. That’s down from last year’s rate of 8.8 percent for the same month.
Counties with the lowest unemployment were Shelby at 5.2 percent, Coffee at 6.2 percent, Limestone at 6.4 percent, Madison at 6.4 percent and Lee at 6.4 percent.
Counties with the highest unemployment were Wilcox at 17.8 percent, Bullock at 15.4 percent and Dallas at 15.1 percent.
