DEMOPOLIS-When the sun goes down on Christmas on the River celebrations the weather can get very cold. Saturday, Dec. 3, First Christian Church will do their part to keep everyone warm.

The church will sponsor a chili supper from 4 until 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Pastor Marshall Murphy said members wanted to do something more for the community. He said two months ago, they began to brainstorm and the chili supper was a popular choice.

“We really wanted to do something more for our community,” Murphy said. “One of our church members, Larry Ross, brought the idea up in a church board meeting. One of our other church members, Johnny Johnson, said why don’t we do it during Christmas on the River.”

The dinner will do more than keep people warm. It will help the youth of Marengo County. Murphy said the money raised would help local youth and team with another organization to provide a merry Christmas for under-privileged youth.

“Fifty percent of the proceeds will go towards the United States Marine Corp. Toys for Tots campaign,” Murphy said. “The other 50 percent will go to the First Christian Church Youth account.”

The dinner is open to anyone who would like a sit-down meal during Christmas on the River. Chili will be $3 and drinks will be $1. Demopolis Policemen who attend will be treated to free chili.

Murphy said Mark Favela, Joanne Baker Anne Jackson formed a committee for the event and went well out of their way to make it succeed.

“Mark actually drove all the way to Texas to get the chili,” Murphy said. “We know it is going to be really good.”
