DEMOPOLIS-Each year, the final Saturday of Christmas on the River is largely composed of outdoor events. However, this year, the threat of rain could shuffle the schedule significantly.

Demopolis Events and Tourism Director Kelley Smith said weather could affect events such as the parade, but it would depend heavily on how much precipitation falls.

“Most of the changes that will be made will depend on what kind of rain we have,” Smith said. “If it is showering, we will postpone the parade. If it is raining heavily, the parade will probably be cancelled.”

If stormy conditions hit, Smith said they would make everyone aware of any changes.

“That is just something we will have to look at during the day,” Smith said. “If it rains, we will make an announcement one way or the other on the parade route.”

Rains could be hit or miss Saturday. According to the National Weather Service at Birmingham, Saturday morning calls for mostly cloudy conditions with a high near 72 degrees. Winds are expected to be out of the Southeast with a 40 percent chance of rain.

As the day progresses, the chance for showers are expected to increase. Saturday afternoon’s forecasts call for a 50 percent chance of rain. Lows are expected to be in the 50’s.

Saturday’s outdoor events kickoff with Fair in the Square from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. There will be live entertainment throughout the day. At 8 a.m., the Jingle Bell walk and run registration will begin.

Parades begin at 11:30 a.m. with the Children’s Day parade downtown. Outdoor events come to a close at 6:30 with the Nautical Parade and fireworks display at the Riverbank of the Tombigbee.
