LINDEN — It took the Lady Longhorns (10-0) one inning to get going and four to get it over with as they blasted Morgan 15-0 in a four-inning tilt that ended prematurely Monday.

Marengo Academy entered the second inning in a scoreless game before hanging seven on the board in the home half of the frame. The Lady Longhorns then added three in the third and five in the fourth to envoke the 15-run rule and end the game.

Jessica Brock pitched all four innings, striking out five, walking one and surrendering two hits. Katie Tucker went 1-for-3 at the plate with an inside-the-park home run and four RBIs. Destiny Huckabee went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and an RBI. Kaliegh Robison went 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and three runs. Ann Edmonds put together a 3-for-4 day with a double and three RBIs. Brock went 3-for-3, giving way to courtesy runner Chandler Stenz each time. Stenz scored three runs. Nicole Langley and Reesa Holifield each went 1-for-2 with a walk, a run and an RBI. Caitlin Moore went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs. Shelby Mathis compiled a 2-for-3 day with two runs.

“I’m just trying to pray we don’t peak too soon,” MA head coach Todd Mathis said. “This bunch tends to be a lot more loose. They can be silly and still play ball.”

The Lady Longhorn win came on the heels of a weekend tournament at Patrician Academy in which Marengo defeated Tuscaloosa Academy twice, Wilcox Academy, Macon-East and reigning Class AAA champion Glenwood Academy once each to win the event’s championship. Marengo outscored opponents 29-6 in the five-game stretch.

Brock’s win on Tuesday served as her fourth in four days, a feat Mathis said comes as no surprise to him.

“She’s doing a good job,” Mathis said. “It’s nothing she’s not used to. She’s been playing travel ball. Mentally, she’s used to it.”

In addition to Brock, the Lady Longhorns have begun to rely heavily on freshman Ally Vick, who emerged in part during the weekend tournament at Patrician.

“We found out we have a No. 2 pitcher,” Mathis said. “She had to grow up quick in Butler and she did. She had to step in against one of the better hitting teams in private school (against Wilcox Academy) and she shut them down.”

The Lady Longhorns play are set to play again Thursday when they host Lowndes Academy at Scott Park in Linden at 4 p.m.
