Sometimes, through the course of spring-cleaning, there are items you just can’t fit in the garbage can.

Next Saturday, March 4, the Demopolis Public Works Department and Arrow Disposal will work together to solve this problem.

From 8 a.m. until noon, the Days Inn and the corner of Cedar and East Capital Streets behind the police station to allow people to drop off some items they otherwise would not be able to dispose of will station trucks at the old state troopers post.

Demopolis Public Works Superintendent Mike Baker said the program is something they do a couple of times a year to give people the opportunity to dispose of items they would normally have to haul to the dump.

“We are going to have a spring cleanup day,” Baker said. “A couple of times a year, Arrow Disposal is kind enough to furnish garbage trucks on a Saturday for anything that anybody wants to throw away. If they clean out their closets and need to dispose of something and don’t want to put it on the street, this is a day people can bring it out to the locations they have around town and they will dispose of it.”

The service is free and open to a variety of items. Old mattresses, washing machines and dryers, couches and love seats are among the items that can be dropped off. Refrigerators can also be dropped off, provided the compressors have been removed.

There are certain items that they can’t dispose of. Arrow Disposal Manager Randy Hood said there are limits to what they can take.

“Tires, batteries and any hazardous waste or materials we can’t dispose of,” Hood said. “The landfill won’t accept those items, so we can’t take them.
