Marengo County Retired Education Employees Association (MCREEA) is currently seeking new members.

The association is made up of retired teachers from any school system, their spouses and anyone who is a friend of public education.

“We would love to have some more people join the association,” said group president Elizabeth Ayers.

There are roughly 35 members currently in the group representing schools from all different areas. Ayers is retired from Autauga County, but participates with the MCREEA after moving to Marengo County with her husband.

Community service is a vital part of the association, Ayers said.

In the past, the organization has held a Christmas program for the elderly at a nursing home, adopted a class, participated in Retired Teacher’s Day during American Education Week and state initiatives like Help Feed Alabama.

A recent addition to the association is recent retiree Annie Robertson, who retired from Demopolis High School in 2010 after 25 years in education.

Passionate about teaching, Robertson began teaching as a language arts instructor. Throughout the years, she taught technology classes, law and an exploring teaching course.

“I am a new addition to the association, and I have a heart for volunteerism,” she said.

Robertson worked 18 years at Amelia Love Johnson High School and seven years at Demopolis High School.

“I would also like to see the schools contact us if there is anything they need from us,” she said.

Those interested in joining the association are encouraged to come to the meetings.

The next gathering will be held Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. Meetings will continue from November to next April on the second Tuesdays at Marengo County Library. Annual dues are $15.
