The Rotary Club of Demopolis met for a lunch meeting at Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital on Wednesday.

Lindsy Gardner, Terry Sprinkle and Judge Claude Neilson were honored as Paul Harris Fellows at the meeting.

Officers of the Rotary Club of Demopolis are Mike Grayson, president, Susan Grayson, vice president, Braxton Spahos, secretary and Diane Brooker, treasurer.

The Demopolis Rotary Club directors are Jan McDonald, Woody Collins, Braxton Spahos, Frank Osborne and John Cox Webb. Club meeting leaders were Braxton Spahos, chaplain, Dr. Wesley Hill, Song Leader, Mike Grayson, official timekeeper, and Woody Collins, historian.

Those who make a $1,000 contribution to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund, or have a contribution made in their name, are eligible to become Paul Harris Fellows.

Those who receive Paul Harris Fellows Recognition are acknowledged for their exceptional dedication to service organizations and the community.

The recognition was created in memory of Paul Harris, a Chicago attorney, who founded the first Rotary Club in 1905.

The National Association of Rotary Clubs was established in 1910. Rotary International was acclaimed as the organization’s name in 1922, since clubs had formed in other countries.

Rotary International is an organization of professionals that foster efforts to support growing and peaceful relations worldwide. One currently well-known charitable global project of Rotary International is “Polio-Plus,” which supports efforts in the eradication of polio around the world.

President George W. Bush is an honorary Rotary member, along with several other former U.S. presidents that include John F. Kennedy, Calvin Coolidge, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Gerald R. Ford, Herbert Hoover, Richard Nixon, Ronald W. Reagan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman and Woodrow Wilson. U.S. astronaut Neil A. Armstrong, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Thomas Edison, Larry King, U.S. General Douglas MacArthur and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, were all recognized as honorary Rotary members as well.
