Forget about April showers, it’s baseball time and Saturday marks the beginning of the season for young baseball players in Greensboro.

“It’s spring. It’s April and it’s Jamboree Day at the park,” Greensboro Baseball Association board member Francis Mitchell said. “Come out and watch your kids play. Come watch your grandchildren play. And if you don’t have any children, come out and watch someone else’s kids play.”

This year more than 200 youngsters were divided into 19 baseball, softball and tee-ball teams and they’ve been practicing hard to start their season Saturday morning at 9 on the fields at Lion’s Park.

“It’s just a wonderful event because it brings the community together,” Mitchell said. “You can just have fun out there while supporting the children and the community.”

The event’s been held every April for more than 15 years and just because the fields are being reconstructed, the fun is not going to stop. Three of the fields will still be open and more importantly, the concession stand will still serve everything from cheese fries, BBQ plates and BBQ sandwiches to hamburgers, nachos and “traditional baseball hotdogs with all the trimmings.”

Although there is no admission fee for the Jamboree, proceeds from the concession stand will benefit park renovations to improve playing conditions for all children of the community.

And if you can’t make it to Jamboree on Saturday, Mitchell invites everyone to watch the kids during their regular season games every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday night at 5:30 and 7 p.m.

“Just come out and support the children,” she said. “That’s what it’s all about.”
