Nine senior girls from Marengo County will compete Saturday, Sept. 22 for the title of Distinguished Young Woman of Marengo County for 2013.

More than $8,000 in scholarship money will be awarded. In addition to scholastic ranking and interviews, the candidates will perform poise, talent and fitness routines on stage.

The competition will be held Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Demopolis High School Auditorium.

The public is encouraged to attend. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and are available at the door the night of the program.

Barkley Nolie Ramsey attends Thomasville High School. Her career goals include being a surgeon and her college choice includes The University of Alabama. Her activities include Alabama Thespian Student State Board, Leo Club president, FCCLA representative and the Friendship Baptist Church youth group among other things. Her talent is playing the piano and she will play “Butterflies and Hurricanes” by Matthew Bellamy. Her parents are Dallas Ramsey and Emily Tyler.

Chandler Hope Moore attends Demopolis High School. Her career goals include studying radiology and her college choice include the University of South Alabama. She has been a part of the Anchor Club, the United Methodist Church Youth Group, the United Methodist Church Adult Choir, the Key Club and several other things. Her talent is a vocal presentation singing, “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra. Her parents are William Moore and Dawn Robison.

Taylor Lynn Barley attends Marengo Academy. Her career goals include pediatric nursing and her college choice includes Shelton State Community College. She has participated in the honor society, beta club, student christian organization, spanish club and several other things. Her talent is musical dance and her selection is “You Can’t Stop The Beat” from Broadway’s Hairspray. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Barley.

Sutton Elyse Aiken attends Demopolis High School. She plans to become a registered dietician with a minor in business. Her college choice includes The University of Alabama. Her activities include member of Fairhaven Baptist Church, DHS BETA Club, DHS DECA Club, and DHS Cheerleader among other things. Her talent includes a broadway vocal presentation of “Show Off’ from Broadway’s The Drowsy Chaperone by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison. Her parents are John Aiken and Lisa Moody.

Rachel Elizabeth Gavin attends Clarke Prep School. Her career goals include early childhood special education and studying at The University of Alabama. Her activities include Clarke Prep School cheerleader, prom committee, and fellowship of Christian Athletes among other things. Her talent will be a gymnastics routine performed to “He’s a Pirate” by Klaus Bedelt. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Craig Gavin.

Shannon Sierra Pittman attends Demopolis High School. She plans to study Forensic Science and minor in theatre at The University of Alabama at Birmingham. She has participated in BETA Club, student council, volleyball team and dance line among other things. She will sing and dance to “Joyful Joyful.” Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Tony Pittman.

Alexis Alessandra Jones attends Demopolis High School. She plans to be a Chemical Engineer and study at The University of Alabama. She has participated in varsity softball, varsity basketball, marching band, and DECA. She will play “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele on her saxophone. Her parents are Mr. Charles Jones, Jr. and Mrs. Alessandra Jones.

Sommer Horshok attends Demopolis High School. She has plans to become a Psychiatrist or Nurse Anesthetist and study at Auburn University or Troy University. Her activities include Calvary Baptist Church youth member, Beta Club president, and varsity cheerleader among other things. Her talent is a vocal and skit with “Guys and Dolls” by Joseph L. Mankiewicz as her selection. Her parents are Mrs. Brandi Hill and Mr. Steve Horshok.

Victoria Elizabeth Washburn attends Demopolis High School. She plans to be a Physical Therapist and study at the University of West Alabama. Her activities include Key Club president, Key Club secretary, member of Anchor Club and member of Youth Lead among other things. Her talent will be a Jazz Dance to the selection “Diamonds are a girl best friend” by Choreographer Ashley Fuller at JSD. Her mother is Ms. Connie Burdett.
