The Demopolis City Schools Superintendent Al Griffin and Alabama Education Association official Labarron Mack urged those in attendance to vote in support of the Sept. 18 referendum at the school board meeting on Monday.

The referendum, which allows the state to use 437 million dollars over three years from the Oil and Gas Trust fund to the general fund, will affect schools as well, according to AEA official Mack.

In efforts to grant a local perspective, Mack said if the referendum isn’t passed it would hurt the hospital, the schools, correctional facilities and nursing homes.

“I urge people to get out and vote,” Griffin said.

Also at the meeting the school board approved a request from AIR EVAC Lifeteam to land a helicopter at the DHS game on Friday against Selma High, pending insurance coverage of any incidents.

The school board approved accommodations for two school overnight field trips including the USJ 4-H Trip Sept. 24-26 and the DHS River City Blue Band trip to Troy University Oct. 5-6.
