After opening their season with a win, the A.L. Eagles couldn’t continue last week’s momentum as Friday’s game resulted in a 18-35 loss to the St. Luke’s Wildcats (1-1) of Mobile.

The Eagles defense struggled to stop the Wildcats running game early in the game as senior running back George Payne scored the first touchdown with a 60-yard run.

“It seems like we had trouble with everything tonight, it started in the first quarter and we just never recovered,” Coach Jones said. “We had trouble shutting down their running game.”

With a total of three rushing touchdowns from Payne, and a rushing touchdown by senior Justin Ware, the Wildcats rushing game dominated the first half giving them a roaring 28-0 lead over the Eagles at the half.

To begin the second half, it appeared Eagles senior quarterback Demarcus Woods had trouble connecting with receivers and getting the ball in the air.

Despite the Wildcats putting another seven points on the board to start the half, rushing yards by Woods and senior Castillo Huggins led the Eagles to the one yard line. Unfortunately, the Eagles fumbled the ball and failed to recover.

However, this fumble did lead to the Eagles seeing the in-zone for the first time for the night after forcing the Wildcats to give up a safety for 2 points.

Momentum then picked up for the Eagles after a 10-yard touchdown run by Huggins, the Eagles sealed the deal with a successful 2-point conversion bringing the score 10-35.

After successfully completing a 30-yard pass to Huggins, the Eagles saw another touchdown in their grasp. Woods then finished the drive with a 12-yard run scoring their final points for the night.

“We worked on our penalties from last week and made progress,” Jones said. “This week we have to go in, work on things we did well and have a good practice to get ready for next week.”
