Demopolis principals attended the Demopolis School Board meeting Monday to report a great first day for their respective schools.

Demopolis Middle School principal Blaine Hathcock said they began the first day of their “Hawaii 50” program that promotes school attendance in addition to no check-ins or check-outs.

“We are going to have a luau for the students that attend school everyday for the first 50 days with no check-ins or check-outs,” Hathcock said.

Principals Tony Pittman, Tony Speegle and Leon Clarke of Westside, U.S. Jones and Demopolis High respectively all gave good reports for their first day of school as well.

Dr. Al Griffin presented a data powerpoint to the attendees with comprehensive AYP results of the proficiency level growth of the students in the school system.

“I am very pleased with our results this year,” he said.

Moving forward, the school board also voted to begin a professional services agreement with JBHM Education Group for the consultants to come in to aid teachers in the high school.

“This is a proactive approach we are taking to help the teachers prepare the students for the graduation exam,” Griffin said.

In addition to being pleased with the testing results, the school board also honored a student’s achievements at the meeting.

Victoria Washburn, was recently named Miss Teen Alabama and she is an incoming senior at Demopolis High School. Dr. Griffin read a resolution congratulating her and commending her for representing the school system well.
