DEMOPOLIS &8212; The Braxton Senior Day Care Center held its Fifth Annual Benefit Golf Tournament on May 19 at the Demopolis SportsPlex.

The non-profit center held to tournament looking to raise money through the event to help fund its programming and provide a day of fun for golfers in the area. Center Director Annye H. Braxton said the event ended up being the largest turnout for the annual tournament yet.

Braxton said prior to the event she expected 50 to 60 participants for the event. Though the pre-registration only had 24 golfers the morning of the tournament, Braxton said the amount of golfers that came out and registered the day of the event put the Center over its goal.

Each participant paid a $65 entry fee to participate in the tournament, which covered more than just the green fees and cart. Along with the prizes for the various competitions and the tournament itself, the golfers enjoyed some food throughout the day, with breakfast, lunch and snacks provided by organizers.

Aside from tournament winners, John Harris was named the men&8217;s longest drive winner, while B.J. Washington carried away the closest to the pin award. For the women&8217;s competition Tommie Jean Gilbert carried away both honors. The center also awarded Booker T. Washington from Illinois the award for traveling the longest distance to participate.

All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the Braxton Senior Day Center. The 12-year-old center mission is to strengthen the communities it serves by building strong individuals mentally, physically and spiritually. Braxton said this enables the seniors to stay home much longer as they interact with family and friends.
