Circle of friends highlight hospital art exhibit

For more than 10 years, a group of local ladies have gathered together around easels and brushes, blossoming a deep friendship nurtured by their mutual love of art.
Collectively known as the Monday Monets, Sheron Laney, Louise Reynolds, Beverly Youngblood, Betsy Coplin, Rebecca Marlowe and Lynda Coley have spent more than a decade’s worth of Mondays putting their passion for art onto canvas.
Over the years, the attendance of the women has changed. Work schedules, family obligations, vacations and life in general have seen to that. However, what hasn’t changed is the group’s dedication to a hobby that’s filled a day of the week most have come to dread.
“We truly enjoy it,” Reynolds said. “It’s been a lot of fun for us.”
Sunday, the ladies – who take their name from French impressionist painter Claude Monet – will be featured at Bryan W. Whitfield as part of their quarterly art exhibit. A reception will begin at 1:30 p.m.
“It’s the first time we’ve been shown as a group,” Reynolds recalled. “We’re really pleased that everyone who’s been part of our little group of friends from the beginning to now is going to be showing at the same time.”
Reynolds is careful not to call the women a group.
“We’re not a group,” she said. “We’re friends who get together and paint.”
For the last several years, the women have gathered at Reynolds’ home and help one another create their individual works.
“Everyone just paints whatever they want,” she said. “None of us have really been schooled in art so we help one another where we can.”
