Golfers are still needed for the 37th Annual Demopolis Rotary Club Charity Golf Tournament to benefit Camp ASCCA.
“It’s always slow until the last couple of weeks,” tournament co-chair Bill Meador said, “but we need golfers. We need participants. It’s a great, great charity.”
All funds raised from the April 30 event will go to help Alabama’s Special Camp for Children and Adults (ASCCA), a camp open year-round for individuals with physical and mental disabilities.
“I think last year we contributed somewhere around $5,000 to Camp ASCCA,” Meador said.
At its inception the tournament benefitted ASCCA but moved away from the charity for a few years.
“(Demopolis rotarian and former tournament chairman) Jay Reynolds took the lead and brought it back to Camp ASCCA,” Meador said. “We just felt like it was a very worthy charity to help.”
The cost for the event is $75 per person and includes a free steak dinner during the Thursday, April 29 social to be held at the Demopolis Country Club. The fee also includes a beef brisket lunch on Friday, 27 holes of golf, hole-in-one prizes on all par threes, free refreshments on the course and one free practice round Thursday, April 29. Participants will also receive goodie bags that include caps from Alvin Williams and the folks at New Era.
“This tournament has always been about friendships,” Meador said, alluding to the Thursday night social, an event that has generally been a favorite of tournament participants. “A lot of people will be back in town for it. The fee includes the steak and all the trimmings. And we’ll have entertainment that night with Will Ulmer.”
Participants will be able to compete in either a medal play division in which USGA medal play rules apply or a four-ball division in which a two-man team will count its best score per hole.
Meador and his co-chair, Joe Parr, started planning the event in January along with other committee members. Organizers are hopeful for 100 golfers.
Entry forms can be picked up at Marengo Insurance, Batter Up Sports Grill, Omni Sports and the Demopolis Country Club. Forms and entry fees are due in by April 27.
