Funds can boost efficiency, free

Beginning April 19, Alabamians have an opportunity to boost our local economy, improve the environment, and put money in their pockets all at the same time.

Rebates up to $150 are available to residents who replace certain old appliances as part of the Alabama Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program.

Rebates are available when you replace old room air conditioners, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers and refrigerators with new Energy Star-labeled models. The state’s energy office is administering approximately $4.1 million in rebates made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

True to the spirit of the act, the program is designed to give an economic boost to Alabama retailers. Many of us cut back on spending as the nation’s economy slumped, resulting in less business for our merchants.

A Web site has been established, www.alrebates.com where you can reserve a rebate or you can call (877) 856-6645.

Reservations will not be accepted before April 19, and appliances purchased prior to that date are not eligible for rebates. Alabamians should act quickly starting April 19. The rebates will be first come, first served until May 9 or when the funds are exhausted.
