DEMOPOLIS &8212; Upcoming Demopolis High School senior and wing on the school&8217;s basketball team, Casey Cantey, has a big month ahead of him. The team starter is going to two venues where his talented play will be analyzed by college scouts, the Alabama High School athletic Association&8217;s North/South all-star game and an Amateur Athletic Union tournament in Las Vegas.
Cantey will leave Sunday to travel to Huntsville for the first of the two events, which finishes Thursday and hosts players who were selected from across the state to compete in the game. Leading up to the game, Players will workout with top coaches from Alabama and have a chance to practice and play with other outstanding players from across the state.
Following the state game, Cantey will turn around and travel to Las Vegas from July 18 to Aug. 1, where he will participate in a tournament that will draw college scouts from across the nation.
Cantey said the team is a summer league out of Huntsville, with which players must be invited to play. He said he is in his second year with the team, plying on the younger division squad last year and varsity this year.
Cantey said the summer league and other events he plays in give him a way to play other positions than he does on the high school team. Since he is one of the tallest players on the Demopolis squad, his size is taken advantage of by playing him down low as a small forward.
Cantey said, though he may be considered a big man in the area, he has pretty good range on his shot and good ball handling skills. He said his size isn&8217;t an issue on the AAU team, which lets him branch out in his role.
Cantey said, as his jump shot progresses, Bell told him that he would see some different looks next season. He said he hopes to get some time shooting out on the wing.
Though the events that Cantey is traveling to this summer will draw attention from college scouts, he said there is no school in particular that he wants to play for more than others. He does hope his play draws attention of scouts though:
While he wants to play on the next level after high school, Cantey wants it not as a spring board to the NBA but, rather, to an education.
