OUR OPINION: Community should support area merchants

The recent opening of new businesses in the downtown Demopolis area is a positive sign that downtown is &8220;coming back,&8221; as Ray Saliba, a downtown business owner said in an article in Tuesday&8217;s edition. We support business growth throughout Marengo County and especially growth at our back door in the heart of our home city.
Not only are we encouraged by the new downtown developments, but also the downtown merchants have shown excitement at the new interest in downtown growth and have been welcoming to the new establishments. In recent weeks we have seen the opening of a home decor business, a soul food restaurant and this weekend we will see the opening of a new bar and grill, all of which are welcome additions to the city.
While the news of new business is great, the businesses count on the community to survive and, better yet, grow. Therefore, it is essential that we support these establishments and already existing businesses within our communities alike. Shop locally when buying a gift for someone or when you are planning a special dinner, eat locally. Taking these small steps to keep local businesses striving is what can make or break businesses. Do your part to invest in the business community and keep it growing.
