DEMOPOLIS &8212; In an effort to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, the fire and police department will be co-sponsoring an event known as National Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 7, behind U.S. Jones Elementary School.

Sgt. Tim Williams said the event is intended for the community to meet with the local police and fire departments in a casual atmosphere so that they can answer any questions about crime prevention. This will be the seventh year that the DPD and DFD have sponsored the event.

This is the 24th annual night out, which is organized by the National Association of Town Watch and involves over 9,000 communities from all 50 states.

In addition to heightening crime and drug prevention awareness, National Night Out is designed to generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National project coordinator Matt Peskin said, &8220;This is a night for America to stand together to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity. National Night Out showcases the vital importance of police-community partnerships and citizen involvement in our fight to build a safer nation. On Aug. 7 we invite neighborhoods nationwide to join us in giving crime and drugs a going away party.&8221;

According to Williams, there will be a dunking booth so &8220;you can dunk your favorite or not so favorite police officer.&8221; There will also be inflatable rides and other activities for the children.

Williams also said that there will be giveaways for the children, drinks, cotton candy, popcorn and corndogs provided by Foster Farms and that all of the activities are free to the public.
