DPD cracking down on carts

Summertime means free time for Demopolis youth and that has created a few issues for the Demopolis Police Department.
Demopolis Police Chief Tommie Reese indicated the department has received numerous complaints from citizens, primarily on the west side of town, about young people driving golf carts on city streets.
“The problem occurs when you have an under-aged child riding aroundo n the streets with other children hanging off of the car,” Reese said. “This is just an accident waiting to happen.”
While improper and unsafe usage of the carts presents potentially hazardous situations, Reese also pointed out that golf carts are not allowed on city streets in Demopolis at all, regardless of who is driving them or the manner in which they are being operated.
“In the past, we have caught kids riding golf carts and escorted them back home and spoken with the parents about the dangers,” Reese said. “The department really doesn’t want to start issuing citations, but we will if this problem continues.”
