SWEET WATER &045; Starting out this season on the heels of a state championship, one-loss season, Sweet Water High School came into 2007 with two goals: a second state championship in two years and a perfect season to cap it off.

A dominant force in 1A in the state, the Bulldogs faced not only a grueling regional schedule but one of the toughest non-regional schedules in the state on the way to achieving their goals. But week-by-week the Bulldogs persevered, stayed focused and achieved their goals.

Week 1 &045; Thomasville

Sweet Water jumped headlong into their season against some of their toughest competition of the season, a No. 2 ranked 2A cross-county line rival in Thomasville High School.

The game proved a sloppy first game of the season, as both teams combined for 15 fumbles and two interceptions. Sweet Water proved a little more aware of where the ball was, covering seven of the Tiger’s 10 fumbles on the way to a 27-13 victory.

Week 2 &045; Akron

If week one was a scrape to keep their goals alive, week two was a preview of what was to come in their region for Sweet Water players.

The group dominated the Rams, putting 472 yards on the ground and 115 yards in the air on the way to a 75-14 win. On defense, the Bulldogs let the Rams into the end zone, but held the team to negative 60 yards.

Week 3 &045;Sunshine

The Sweet Water defense held the Sunshine Tigers to a goose egg on their way to a 64-0 domination of their regional foe.

The Bulldog defense again held their opponent to negative yards, with 16, and only two first downs in their first shutout. All of Sweet Water’s 446 yards in the game came on the ground.

Week 4 &045; Linden

Sweet Water High School faced one of their toughest county rivals in Linden High School. To add flame to the game’s already highly fueled anticipation fire, the Patriots were undefeated under the helm of first year head coach, and previous defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs, Andro Williams.

But Sweet Water players weren’t impressed. The group put up 512 yards in the game and crushed the normally dominate Linden rushing game, holding the Patriots to only 23 yards on the ground on the way to the 49-8 win.

Week 5 &045; Leroy

Against the Leroy Bears, Sweet Water quarterback Drew Luker got a chance to show what he could do through the air in a balanced offensive attack.

Luker completed 7-of-10 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns, while the ground attack put up 162 yards for the ‘Dogs. The ‘Dog defense held the Bears to a meager 13 yards on 24 carries.

Week 6 &045; A.L. Johnson

The Bulldogs put up their second shut out of the season again against a regional opponent when they faced the A.L. Johnson Eagles.

Sweet Water’s offense again dominated, putting up 462 yards in the game with 389 on the ground. The defense, not only keeping the Eagles out of the end zone, also held their opponent to negative 14 yards in the 59-0 win.

Week 7 &045;South Lamar

Again the Sweet Water offense produced and defense held in the group’s third shutout &045; 61-0.

The Bulldogs put up 440 yards of total offense and averaged 11 yards a completion through the air. The Stallions, too, produced through the air, with 39 yards on 10 passes, which was enough to offset the team’s negative 16 rushing yards to get to 23 total yards.

Week 8 &045; John Essex

Sweet Water wrapped up its regional schedule for the season, where it had already secured the No. 1 seed for the playoffs in Region 4, against a one win John Essex High School with a 48-8 win.

Week 9 &045; American Christian

Sweet Water wrapped up its regular season a lot like it started it &045;facing a top ranked team from a larger division.

This time the Bulldogs faced a No. 4, 4A American Christian, who were batting 9-0 on the season to Sweet Water’s 8-0. But school size and record didn’t matter much on the way to the 40-7 route on the road.

Week 10 &045; Providence Christian

The Sweet Water Bulldogs didn’t miss a stride as they transitioned from the regular season to the postseason.

Senior running back Anthony Landrum had a huge game for the ‘Dogs, putting up 208 yards on the ground and four touchdowns. Sweet Water totaled 514 yards to Providence Christian’s 154 (the group had negative eight in the second half) on the way to the 68-7 win.

Week 11 &045; St. Jude

The Bulldogs found themselves in a spot for one of the few times of the season as they headed into the half against St. Jude with the 7-6 lead.

Of course, Sweet Water was its own worst enemy in the half, fumbling six times and losing it three. In the second half they came out a different group and rolled to their 24th strait win by a margin of 52-12.

Week 12 &045; Wadley

Wadley came into Sweet Water unfocused, turning the ball over on its first three possessions. By the time Wadley recovered it was too late and the ‘Dogs strolled to a 39-7 win.

Sweet Water put up 466 total yards to Wadley’s 159 and dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Week 13 &045;Maplesville

Perhaps the hardest fought game of the season for the Bulldogs since the Thomasville game, Sweet Water fought tooth and nail for their 46-36 victory against the Maplesville Red Devils.

It was a game of momentum, as the Sweet Water ground and pound went head to head with the Maplesville run and gun. A game of momentum, the Bulldogs grabbed it when it counted, the fourth quarter, off blitz resulting in a Red Devil fumble.
