The Demopolis High School computer club competed in the state Math and Computing Olympiad at Alabama State University in Montgomery on April 6.

The competition had more than 200 participants with 19 different schools represented. The competition consisted of three events: Web design, Alice 3-D programming and math skills.

In Web design, the DHS team of Nicole Akins, Keith Junious and Sebrina Moore place second. Each member of the team was awarded an Apple iPod Touch with 32 gigabytes of memory and 3G capabilities.

In Alice 3-D programming, the DHS team of Rebecca England, Alex Reid and Keshonna Rembert did well, but was unable to place among the state’s top three.

This was the first year at the state competition to have a math skills category. Each team consisted of members from different grades, and Demopolis’s team consisted of senior Charles McGee, junior Jarius Rembert and sophomore Jamarcus Brown.

The math skills competition consisted of two parts: a challenging written exam and a ciphering Jeopardy! competition for those schools that place among the top six in the written exam.

In the written exam, students engaged in critical thinking while working together to work problems without calculators. Demopolis was one of the top six schools in the written exam and advanced to the ciphering competition. All math modules in that competition were based on the Alabama course “Study for Mathematics.” Demopolis’s overall score of zero was the second-highest among the six schools, with four of the schools attaining negative scores.

This is the ninth year for Demopolis High School to field a computer club. It was established by computer teacher William Martin and is assisted by DHS math teacher Kenneth Webb. The club has attended the Alabama State University Olympiad each year since 2002.
