Our Opinion: Top Honor: Times to select area Athlete of the Year

We have officially kicked off the selection of our Athlete of the Year nominees. An idea originally stemming from a conversation between Times Sports Editor Jeremy D. Smith and a local sports fan about the frustration of local athletes not receiving the recognition they are due on the state level, in particular with awards such as Mr./Miss Football, Basketball, Baseball, etc. selected by metropolitan publications.
We decided it was our turn to recognize our area youth and give them an opportunity to shine. As we have done in recent years, we select a Player of the Week each week, who has exemplified extraordinary play or sportsman-like skills. We consider the new honor as an extension and more prominent award to the weekly recognition.
Area schools&8217; athletic directors are nominating two athletes to represent his or her school. From the pool of nominees an Athlete of the Year will be selected.
We are excited about this new top honor and are extremely proud of our area athletes and the dedication they have to their schools and their sports. Please join us in our enthusiasm in regards to this top honor.
