Marsha McClure Atkins has announced her intent to seek the office of Marengo County Circuit Clerk. She will run as a Democrat.
Atkins, a life-long resident of Linden and graduate of Marengo Academy, served as municipal court clerk for the City of Linden for a decade and also served as a secretary in a local law office.
That experience, she said, makes her an ideal fit for the circuit clerk’s office.
“I have worked with local and surrounding courts, law enforcement and attorneys,” she said. “The fact that I was a court clerk for 10 years and that I have maintained my certification, means I’m very familiar with the duties of the office.”
Further, Atkins said her background as a sitting court clerk would be helpful to bolster the staff and help move documents through the office faster.
“There have been layoffs,” she said. “I’m a hard worker. I can go in and be an additional help, already being familiar with the job. I want to go in there and be a part of that team and take a lot of that work off of them. I want to be part of the solution for the cutbacks.”
Atkins, who has never sought political office before, added that she saw a run for the county’s circuit clerk as a way to get back into a field she has made a career out of, rather than simply seeking office.
“I’m not going after the title,” she said. “I’m going after the job because that’s the work I like to do.”
Atkins is a member of Linden Baptist Church and is married to Pat Atkins. She has two children, Jessica and Randall Sanders.
