DEMOPOLIS &8212; Mike Bell bested 81 other golfers Friday, shooting a 101 by scoring 66 on the first 18 holes played in the 35th annual Demopolis Rotary Charity Golf Tournament.
Bell shot a 35 on the next nine holes to secure the championship.
Bell was two shots ahead of Paul Garner, who carded a 67 on 18 holes and 36 on the next nine.
Bell and Garner each received a set of eight engraved glasses &8212; one marking the tournament champion and the other marking the runner-up.
The tournament raised around $6,000 to be split between Camp ASCA and local charities, tournament chairman Jay Reynolds said.
The actual play took place on the links of the Demopolis Country Club, a facility Reynolds said in optimum condition.
One of the primary objectives for event organizers is providing a sizable return on the entry fee. Aside from top-notch golf competition, the registration fee covers a steak lunch, prizes on all par threes, and free beer and refreshments on the course.
