One group was selling dogs to eat to benefit another group who had dogs available for adoption.

The Bigbee Humane Society held an Adopt-a-Thon at Parr’s main service station on U.S. Highway 80 on Saturday and showed a number of dogs that were up for adoption.

“These puppies were all taken from the shelter here, and Bigbee Humane Society owns them now,” said Cindy McDonald.

The Humane Society was joined by a group called the Sweet Potato Queens, who sold hot dogs to benefit the Humane Society.

“There is a series of books about Sweet Potato Queens by an author in Mississippi. It’s all about Southern women and being Southern, accepting it and loving it and embracing it. It’s a national organization with chapters all over the United States, and Kelley Tarpley at the Demopolis Public Library said we needed a chapter here.”

The Bigbee Humane Society has a Facebook page, where the group can be contacted by those wanting to adopt a pet. People can also contact McDonald at (334) 341-1567.

The Bigbee Humane Society has Adopt-a-Thons almost every Saturday at 10 a.m. at the former site of the Alabama State Troopers building on U.S. Highway 80 adjacent to Regions Bank. They encourage those who have pets to have them spayed or neutered to help keep the pet population under control.
