Carolyn Nelson, the author of “MeMaw’s Southern Cookin’,” will have two book signings next week in Demopolis.
Nelson will sign her latest cookbook on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Maison de Briques from noon to 4 p.m., and will have another book signing at Food World on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon.
“MeMaw’s Southern Cookin’” is the fifth published cookbook for Nelson, who lives in Demopolis. This edition is kind of a “best-of” publication, featuring the recipes of past published cookbooks plus 250 more.
Published in a ring binder with tabbed sections, the cookbook is more than just recipes. Information, including measurements, table settings and more are also included in the book, published by Cookbook Publishers of Lenexa, Kan. The book sells for $25.
“There are nearly 1,200 recipes in this book,” Nelson said. “My first book came out in the 1970s after I submitted so many recipes to the (Demopolis Academy) ‘General Cookbook.’ People said I should do my own cookbook, and a few years later, I decided to do that.”
Nelson has also published cookbooks in the 1980s, ’90s and in 2002.
“The book contains down-to-earth recipes,” Nelson said. “There’s nothing fancy in there. The ingredients are what people can find right here. I said, ‘If I can’t pronounce the recipe, I won’t cook it
“Also, if I don’t like it, it’s not in my book. Many of the recipes that I’ve tried, I did not like. These recipes all suit my taste and my family’s taste.”
The book is planned to be sold through Maison de Briques or Lindsey’s For more information, call 289-2289.
