When Leroy quarterback Clint Moseley was passed over not once but twice for the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game, he did what good team players do — gritted his teeth and went about his business.

Thursday night made up for it.

Moseley was named the the 27th recipient of the Alabama Sports Writers Association Mr. Football Award on Thursday at the ASWA’s annual Player of the Year awards dinner held at the Birmingham News.

“This sort of makes up for it, but I feel like I should have been selected,” said Moseley. “But I feel like this kind of proves it.”

In winning the Mr. Football award, Moseley becomes the first player from a school Class 3A or smaller since Chris Nickson and Class 3A Pike County in 2003 and the smallest school winner since Thomas Banks of Class 1A West Jefferson in 1993. He’s also the first Mr. Football since Nickson not to be selected by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association for the all-star game.

Moseley – a 6-foot-2, 190-pound quarterback – led the Bears to their third-straight Class 2A championship earlier this month as he also came away with his second-straight title-game MVP honor. He also won Class 2A Back of the Year honors by the A SWA on Dec. 4.

Moseley edged out the backs of the year in Class 3A and 6A – Cordova senior running back Tim Simon and Gadsden City defensive back Dre’ Kirkpatrick, respectively – in the voting by the ASWA members who voted on the group’s All-State football committee. He received 195 points and 11 first-place votes, while Simon had 186 points and four first-place votes and Kirkpatrick had 138 points and two firsts.

Rounding out the top five were Sulligent quarterback/defensive back Caleb Massey (105), Leeds defensive lineman/fullback Randon Carnathan (99).

Moseley threw for 3,749 yards this season on 209-of-315 passing with 35 touchdowns and five interceptions – including a 272-yard performance against Sulligent in a 41-8 Class 2A title game win. He also ran for 693 yards and 15 touchdowns on the season. For his career, he has thrown for more than 8,100 yards and 79 touchdowns. He also ended his football career on a 25-game winning streak.

“This is something you dream of as a kid, but you never think it’s going to happen to you,” said Moseley. “Look around at the talent in this room. There’s a lot of talent here and this is just a great honor.”
