U.S. Jones Elementary School will host an art camp for kindergarten through fifth grade this Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon, and it promises to be a week packed with fun, excitement and learning. Students pre-registered last month for this Enrichment camp.

The annual Missoula Children’s Theatre will take place during the next week, June 14-18, at Westside Elementary School for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The participants in that camp will perform “Pinocchio” on June 18. Participation in the theatre camp is free.

On June 21-25, Deborah Boykin will lead the science chef camp at Demopolis High School, which will also involve students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

USJES teacher Amelia Mackey is leading the art camp this week.

“We’ve got Kirk Brooker coming in to work with the students,” she said. “We wanted to bring in an artist, and he certainly has great talent. We want to bring in a potter, too, because we want the kids to be exposed to artists of different media.

“Kirk is going to teach the children some art history, and then, he’s going to let them work in a variety of areas. We’re really excited about that.”

Mackey also said she plans on working with papier mache, tissue art, ceiling panels and a variety of other kinds of art.

The Missoula Children’s Theater will have college students coming to Demopolis to work with students of all grades and teach them about what goes into a theater performance.

“We never have the same group of college students from year to year,” said Carolyn Jones, who is overseeing the Enrichment program. “It’s always a lot of fun.”

The science chef camp on June 21-25 will have Boykin teaching the participants about cooking and nutrition.
