Demopolis High School will host a one-night seminar for all student-athletes and parents who may be considering playing college athletics after graduation.

Titled “The College Bound Student-Athlete,” the seminar will be on Aug. 11 at 6 p.m. at the Demopolis High School gymnasium.

“We’re trying to get information to our students and parents that they have got to pay close attention to the requirements for a student-athlete after high school,” Demopolis High School principal Leon Clark said.

The design of the program is to better educate parents and student-athletes on the eligibility requirements of the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Guest speakers will be Janet Montgomery, associate athletic director at the University of West Alabama, and Dee Outlaw, retired athletic director and director of compliance at UWA.

Montgomery and Outlaw have over 60 years of combined experience in college athletics.

Items on the agenda include the timeline for registration in the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse, Common Eligibility Problems, Amateurism, Transfer Students and High School Core Courses.

Montgomery has been the UWA for 24 years. She has been Associate AD for the past five years after serving many years as head softball coach. She is currently a member of the NCAA Management Council, which serves as board of directors for NCAA Division II.

Outlaw began work in the UWA athletic department in 1972 and retired in 2006 after 12 years as director of athletics.

He is a former member of the NCAA Management Council and currently works part-time in the UWA athletic department.

The seminar is open to all student-athletes in grades 7-12 and their parents.

“We strongly want a parent with any child that has an athlete that feels they may be wanting to go on and play at the next level to come,” Clark said.
