The DHS golf team (6-3) picked up as 28-stroke win Thursday when it outshot Dallas County 163-191 at The Ravine.

“This match is the best they’ve shot all year long,” Demopolis coach Mike Black said.

The win included a pair of players who posted sub-40 outings. Playing out of the No. 1 slot, Jordan Stone shot a 37 on the day while the Tigers’ No. 2, Russ Seale, shot a 39. Ben McCarter tallied a 44 out of the No. 3 slot while James Courtney put together a 43 from the No. 4 position. Rounding out the team’s seeded players, Cameron Wells shot a 47.

“He’s worked his way up to the Top 5 and he’s just a freshman,” Black said of Wells. “Braden Spiller is working his way up and he’s only a seventh grader. They’re really working hard. They’re getting there.”

Spiller shot a 43 in exhibition play. Alex Glass posted a 44. Jeffrey Durett and Sean Griffin each stroked a 47 while Jonathan Large shot a 51. Wesley Watts rounded out his day with a 52.

“I think the one through five players are better (than they were last year),” Black said of his team. “They keep getting better. Every match we’ve played we’ve shot between 165-171 except for one.”

The one match in which the team shot worse than its average was a contest at Monroeville in which it lost by six strokes.

“They usually shoot a lot better than what they shot at Monroeville,” Black said of the setback. “No. 1 was Jordan (Stone). He shot a 44, which is eight strokes off his average. But that’s coming back off of three weeks of not playing.”

The team’s next test will come Monday when it participates in The Brookwood Invitational.

“We’ll know how well we play after Monday. We’re going to the Brookwood Invitational at The Capstone,” Black said. “We’ll be playing 18 holes, walking. That will let us know how ready we are for sectionals. We should be able to get a good perspective out of it.”

Sectionals are scheduled for April 28.
