Judy and Eddie Hoggle received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Easter Vigil Service at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at St. Leo  the Great Catholic Church.

After the vigil mass, a lovely confirmation party was held in their honor by William and Gail Allgood and Steve and Jeanie Davis. The wine and light hors d’oeuvres were beautifully presented at the lovely home of William and Gail Allgood, which was decorated with lovely colorful spring flowers.

Guests included Eddie and Jana Hoggle of Thomaston; Clarence and Harriet Piper of Valley Grande; Steven Davis of Birmingham; and Stan and Cindy Reeves, Shane Allgood, A.J. Allgood and Seth Allgood, all of Demopolis.

Christen Allgood of Virginia Beach, Va., who is a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, had just departed, but not without saying  goodbye and giving a lovely gift .

Judy and Eddie remarked that the confirmation service was touching and inspiring, a day they will never forget. They were also so appreciative of the hostesses, William and Gail Allgood, and Steve and Jeannie Davis.

Mary Jean Goldman served as hostess to the Southside Garden Club on March 26. President Corinne Slayden opened the meeting with a comical saying by Janet Evanovich, best-selling author and award winner of Romantic Times.

Members were asked to meet at Bluff Hall to weed and plant new plants in the herb gardens on April 14 at 9 a.m. if weather permits.

Doris Kirkpatrick reported plans for Arbor Day in April. Three classes from the elementary school will participate. A report on the District IV meeting held in Northport was given by Corinne. Three members and one guest attended from Southside Club.

The new district officers were elected, and Ann Daniels, president-elect for Garden Club of Alabama, installed them.

There were approximately 70 in attendance from nine district clubs.

Teresa Johnson, owner of the Plant Lady Nursery in Tuscaloosa, was the featured speaker

Polly Hill spoke about an article she had read from Southern Living Magazine. A couple who lived in the mountains of Cashiers, N.C., had de-veloped a well organized garden. She grew the flowers and he grew the vegetables. They agreed that a proper garden is not complete without a fence or well for division.  Their garden featured a geometric bed and perpendicular pathways along fencing, gates and arbors.

The hostesses served sandwiches, cheese straws, angel food cake with strawberries, and ice-cold lemonade for refreshments.

Bunny Abrams, president of the Demopolis Music Study Club, introduced Dr. Betty Campbell, a music professor from Judson College, who in turn introduced three of her soprano students. Mary Amelia Taylor, Amber Taylor and Deann Watman kept the audience entranced as they sang several spiritual solos, including “Art Thou Trouble,” “Wedd-ing Song,” “Give me Jesus” and “Greatest of These is Love.”    “An-gel of Music” from “Phantom of the Opera,” “Prayer” from “Hansel and Gretel” and “Psalm 23” were sung as duets between the ladies.

They concluded their performance by combining their voices in a rendition of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy from Company B.”

During the business meeting, ballots were given members to vote on new members for the next club year.

Treasurer Doris Kirk-patrick gave the balance in the checking account and the scholarship fund balance.  Monies will be transferred from checking to scholarship to complete a scholarship loan of $1,000.

Officers for the 2009-10 year were nominated and elected. Those elected were president Cloyde Williams, vice president Bunny Abrams, prospectus Bernice Cork, secretary Eloise Harris and treasurer Betty Baxley. They will be installed at the May meeting.

Sixteen members and six visitors were in attendance at the First Presbyterian Church. Serving as hostesses were:  Linde McAdams, Linda Burnham, Betty Russell and Elaine Carr.
