The Tiger tennis team ended its season on the road this week, finishing in third place at sectionals on both the girls’ and boys’ sides.
“On the boy’s side, I thought we competed well,” head coach Jeremy Sullivan said.
“We ran into Walker, who is the three-time defending 5A state champions and they played like it. “Then we faced Chilton and they had four seniors and were very good.
“They beat (No. 1 seeded) Walker McNeil in the second round. They’re basically the ones who put us out.”
Sullivan said the strongest singles performance of the tournament came from freshman Neilsen Renner.
“Neilsen Renner had our best showing in singles,” Sullivan said.
“He made it all the way to the finals.“He beat Chilton 10-8 and lost to Walker in the finals 6-1, 6-1.”
Sullivan said the girls draw featured a handful of competitive showings.
“Hillary Stapp has been our most consistent player,” Sullivan said. “I was real impressed with the play of Sidney Hill and Alexa Beach.”
Sullivan reported being pleased with the progress of the team this season and has high expectations for the program’s future.
“I think both of our boys and girls have a good chance at making state next year,” Sullivan said.
“We’re only losing one boy and one girl.”
