Demopolis City Council member Thomas Moore was elected vice president of the Alabama League of Municipalities for the 2010-11 year.

The election was done by his fellow municipal colleagues at the ALM convention in Mobile on May 18. As vice president, Moore will become the president of the ALM for the 2011-12 year.

Moore also serves on the board of directors for the Municipal Workers Compensation Fund. He has chaired the League’s Committee on State and Federal Legislation and served on numerous ALM committees in his 18 years of membership. He also served as chairman and vice chairman of the Community and Economic Development Committee twice.

“I just take an interest in the state level,” Moore said. “I want to learn all that I can and bring it back to Demopolis and apply it to our city. I also enjoy being a player on the state level the best that I can.”

As vice president of the ALM, Moore will go to Washington, D.C., to lobby Congress as well as the Alabama Legislature to develop a legislative priority.

“ALM means a great deal to me,” he said. “It is a great resource to council members and mayors. When I first started, I had some idea of what government was all about, but through the training sessions and the resources, I now serve as a mentor to incoming council members who request my assistance.”

Moore has been on the Demopolis City Council since February 1992, one of the longest tenures for the city’s legislative body.

“I thoroughly enjoy it; I like to be active,” Moore said of his service on the council. “I really like to effect change in a positive way. I think I’m a voice of reason. I listen, I study, I bring no hidden agendas to the table. “

Moore said that some of the issues facing him as ALM’s vice president include working to get home rule brought before the Legislature, allowing cities more autonomy for things like millage, and other infrastructure issues, trying to increase the state appropriation Community Development Block Grants.
