Charles Singleton, Demopolis area president of BankTrust, is pleased to announce that Richard S. Manley, partner of Manley, Traeger, Perry and Stapp Attorneys, has been named to the Demopolis advisory board. Manley joins Mem Webb, Gary Butler, Dan Wilson, Alvin Williams, and Jay Shows.

Rick Manley is one of Alabama’s distinguished lawyers and public servants. He received his B. S. Degree from the University of Alabama Business School in 1953, was then commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Marines. After active duty, he entered law school at the University of Alabama and graduated in 1958. After 23 years in the Marine Reserves, he retired as the rank of Colonel.

Rick has been in private practice in Demopolis his entire legal career. He has been the city attorney for Demopolis continuously since 1976. He represented Demopolis, Marengo County, and surrounding areas in the Alabama House of Representatives for 17 years from 1966-1984, and while serving, was elected Speaker Pro Tem of the House. He represented Demopolis, Marengo County and Choctaw, Clarke, Washington, Monroe and Conecuh Counties in the Alabama State Senate serving for four years from 1986-1990.

He is a former member of the Demopolis Rotary Club and past President of the Demopolis Area Chamber of Commerce. He also served as Chairman of the Demopolis City School Board and was a member for five years.

He served as president of the 17th Judicial Circuit Bar Association comprised of Marengo, Greene, and Sumter Counties. He served 24 consecutive years as a member of the Board of Bar Commissioners and served three times as vice-president of the Alabama State Bar. He received the Alabama State Bar’s Award of Merit in 1982. He is a past president of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and a member of the Alabama Law Institute for over 25 years, and has served on the Executive Committee for the past 14 years.

He is a member of the University Of Alabama School Of Law Foundation Board, and has served 12 years on the Alabama Supreme Court Standing Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure, and now a member emeritus.

He previously served six years as a member of the Alabama State Council on the Arts by appointment from the Governor, and is currently serving as a member of the Alabama Men’s Hall of Fame Board.
