I continue to be amazed at the things there are to do in this town.

Over the course of the next several weeks, those occasional trips to Tuscaloosa or Meridian will be harder and harder to make with all the attractions we have going on here.

If you missed Thursday’s installment of Sax in the City, you missed a real treat. The outdoor concert featured the Gee’s Bend Quilters Collective singing, storytelling and quilting in Public Square in downtown Demopolis.

These women have received acclaim nationwide.

More than 50 quiltmakers make up the Gee’s Bend Collective. Four of them graced Demopolis Thursday and riveted the small crowd with their storytelling and their singing.

Sitting there with my family, listening to these ladies, it was much like listening to a grandparent recall the trials and tribulations of their childhood.

The entire hour was fascinating.

The organization Coming Together For Charity will play a series of basketball games at U.S. Jones Elementary School or the Theo Ratliff Activity Center on Friday, June 19. Scheduled games include Wal-Mart vs. Alabama Power at 6 p.m., Demopolis Fire and Rescue Dept. vs. the Demopolis Police Dept. at 7 p.m. and New Era vs. Foster Farms at 8 p.m.

All donations received will go toward charity foundations.

This proves to be an interesting time, and I can’t wait to see the match-up between the fire and rescue department and the police department.

Also just around the corner is Freedom on the River.

The events will take place on Saturday, July 4, at the Demopolis City Landing beginning at 7 p.m. with the Children’s Patriotic Parade. The parade encourages children of all ages to decorate their modes of transportation (wagons, strollers, skateboards, bicycles, etc.) in red, white and blue for a parade from the Demopolis Civic Center to the Demopolis City Landing. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in three age groups based on creativity and festivity.

Following the parade will be a time to partake in the food and children’s activity vendors that will be present. Then, of course, the Freedom Fireworks Extravaganza will kick off shortly after dark.

For you theatre buffs, the Canebrake Players summer drama camp will be held July 13-17.

That proves to be a week of great fun and a real learning experience for those looking to hone their acting chops on the local stage.
