Anna Margaret Jones, a senior at Demopolis High School, was named the 2011 Marengo County’s Junior Miss at the county program held Saturday at the Old School in Demopolis.
Jones is the daughter of Dr. Bryan Jones and Emily Taylor and wants to study internal medicine in college.
“All of these girls worked very hard; I thought they were all deserving,” Jones said. “We practiced every Sunday and practiced every day this week. Our Little Sisters (assistants) were great — they really helped a lot — and we couldn’t have done any of this without (program director) Katie Echols and her staff.”
Jones was selected from eight high school seniors in the scholarship competition. Contestants were judged on the basis of a 10-minute interview (25 percent of the score), scholastic transcript (20 percent), talent (25 percent), poise (15 percent) and fitness (15 percent).
Others competing in the program were first alternate Maggie Spiller of Demopolis High School, second alternate Morgan Cooper of Demopolis High School, Kaitlyn Freeman of Demopolis High School, Jennie Hurst of Demopolis High School, Anna Katherine Lindsay of Victory Christian homeschool, Nakeia Rodgers of Sweet Water High School and Hilary Thomas of Demopolis High School.
Jones received a $1,600 cash scholarship for winning the Junior Miss medallion. Spiller received $1,300 for being named first alternate, and Cooper received $1,000 for being named second alternate.
Jones will represent Marengo County is the state competition in Montgomery in January.
Jones earned the Spirit of Junior Miss Award for best representing what Junior Miss is all about, receiving $850 with the award. Other awards and their cash scholarships included:
•Fitness: Spiller, first place, $600, and Jones, second place, $300.
•Talent: Jones, first place, $600, and Spiller, second place, $300.
•Poise: Jones, first place, $600, and Spiller, second place, $300.
•Scholastic achievement: Spiller, first, $600, and Hurst, second place, $300.
